Writing Across the Curriculum at Landmark College (WAC@LC): Statement of Mission and Goals
Approved by WAC@LC Program Team, April 2022
Approved by the Faculty Senate, April 2023
Mission
Writing Across the Curriculum at Landmark College (WAC@LC) seeks to promote a college-wide culture in which the study of writing and the development of writing practices are understood to be valuable and essential for communication, thinking, learning, constructing meaning, achieving goals, and fostering awareness of self and others.
WAC@LC is grounded in the beliefs that writing and reading are interrelated and complementary activities and abilities, and that college students’ development as writers and readers is ongoing. Responsibility for this development is shared among all faculty at the college, across levels and disciplines/degrees.
We provide resources and opportunities for conversation, consultation, and support to faculty who use writing in their courses, to staff who support student writers, and to students working to become effective, confident, and flexible writers and readers in a variety of contexts.
Central to our WAC mission is the belief that when students are given frequent opportunities for writing across the curriculum, they think more critically and creatively, engage more deeply in their learning, and are better able to transfer what they have learned from course to course, context to context.
Goals
In pursuit of this mission Writing Across the Curriculum at Landmark College (WAC@LC) pursues the following goals:
- Promote the development and use of writing practices for both learning and communication across all levels and disciplines of the curriculum (“learning to write” and “writing to learn”).
- Provide opportunities for faculty collaboration and ongoing professional development related to writing and reading pedagogy, including group sessions and individual consultation.
- Promote understanding of the concepts and principles that cut across all writing tasks.
- Create and share support resources for all faculty who assign writing and use writing in their classes.
- Create accessible resources to support students in their ongoing growth as writers, readers, and thinkers.
- Advise and advocate for clearly articulated threads of writing practice and instruction across our curriculum, disciplines, and degrees.
- Engage in assessment of student learning outcomes related to writing and reading.
